Troubleshooting Flickering Outlets

Why Flickering Happens

Outlet Pal devices use a low-power wireless signal to stay in sync. The Leader sends steady “heartbeat” messages to each Follower, telling them when to turn on or off.

If your Followers start flickering, it’s usually because those messages are being interrupted. Common causes include:

  • Too much interference from nearby wireless devices

  • Thick walls or metal objects between the Leader and Follower

  • A congested channel that’s busy with other signals in your home

The good news is that you can fix most flickering issues in just a few minutes.

Step 1: Check for Simple Physical Obstacles

Sometimes the fix is as simple as repositioning your devices.

  1. Make sure your Leader and Follower have a fairly clear path between them.

  2. Try moving large metal furniture, appliances, or electronics that might block signals.

  3. If your devices are plugged behind a couch or entertainment center, test them in a more open area.

Even a small change in placement can improve communication and stop the flicker.

Step 2: Reduce Wireless Interference

Wireless signals can overlap, especially in busy homes. Things like Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth speakers, and smart hubs all share similar frequencies.

To reduce interference:

  • Unplug or move any wireless devices that are very close to your Outlet Pal units.

  • Avoid plugging your Leader near routers or metal-shelled surge protectors.

  • Try switching off nearby Bluetooth devices temporarily to see if performance improves.

If flickering improves after moving devices around, you’ve found the cause.

Step 3: Reset the Leader to Change Channels

If interference continues, your Leader may need to find a cleaner wireless channel. Resetting it forces the system to scan for a less congested frequency and reconnect on a better one.

To reset your Leader:

  1. Hold down the button on your Leader until the light turns off.

  2. Release the button once it does. The Leader will clear its pairings and restart.

  3. Re-pair your Followers by double-clicking each one to enter pairing mode, then double-clicking the Leader to link them.

Once reconnected, the new channel should eliminate flickering for good.

Step 4: Test Your Setup

After resetting or adjusting placement, test your system:

  1. Flip your wall switch on and off several times.

  2. Check that all Followers respond together, without delay or flicker.

If they do, your connection is stable again.
